Girls in Tech Weekend: Columbia, Take 2

Posted By Kris Shock, Exit10, Monday, October 20, 2014

October 10th and 11th was another great weekend for inspiring Girls in Tech!

Quick note here to THANK the many folks responsible for another great event aimed at GROWING MORE GIRL GEEKS!

First of all the PARTICIPANTS (and the parents/guardians who got them there!)

We were thrilled to welcome more than 40 "Cupcakes and Computers" girls ranging from age 5 - 13 years old to Host Sponsor /training/etc for a great night of girl bonding and tech presentations. They made their own name badges and bonded over pizza and snacks. Then the Hammond High School Robotics Team wowed them with a ball throwing robot! After a quick warmup exercise they split into three age groups for tech presentations. Thank you presenters: Michelle Ballard & Carolyn Gableman from ClearEdge IT Solutions (5-7 year old) , Misty and Malia Melton (8-10 year old) and Katie Spiegel (11-15 year old).

In addition to our "Cupcakes" a dozen high school girls singed up to load software onto their laptops in preparation for a Rails Girls workshop on Saturday, teaching girls how to code using the Ruby programming language. The girls were matched with Coaches on Friday and Saturday to share a bit about their tech careers and coach them through the Ruby workshop. We broke for lunch and a few tech presentations broke up the day. By three o'clock the girls left with a passion for code and a few new friends: Mission Accomplished!

In addition to the folks noted above, huge thanks to Angie Lienert and IntelliGenesis for continued sponsorship support. Thanks to our newest sponsor, the Kappa Kappa Gamma Alumnae Association. Thanks to volunteer wrangler Jen Tress (also ClearEdge IT) and head coach Alana Frome. We truly couldn't off the program without a network of Ruby enthusiasts to come through as coaches; thank you John Mikucki, Adam Schwartz,Brian Sierakowski. Thank you all over volunteers Meghan Shepherd (again ClearEdge! They were all over it! Thank you ClearEdge!) and Eric Spiegel!

Finally enough cannot be said to thank Susan Schneider, our gracious host at her wonderful facility /training/etc. Susan not only donated her facility (along with sodas, and all!), contributed her full spirit (and drafted her husband Bill too! Thanks Bill!) to assist with supporting the event all weekend. Her passion for girls in tech is contagious and from pulling in the robotics to the computer volunteerism program she showcased to the Rails Girls, we remain so grateful for her support and her marvelous example of a highly successful Woman in Tech!

Thank you one and all!

So the most frequently asked question of the Girls in Tech Weekend was "When will there be MORE?" (What's next? When will you do this again...?) The CRTC Women in Tech Forum Group is very proud to offer these programs as Volunteerism/Education initiatives and our goal is to offer TWO Girls in Tech Weekends each year - one in the spring and one in the fall. If you would like to stay in the loop on the next program, please email us with subject line "Girls in Tech" and we'll be sure to reach out when we begin planning the next program! Please be sure to let us know if you are reaching out as a participant or a volunteer (coach, presenter, general volunteer).

Looking forward,

Kris
