CRTC - Week 11.5 Shout-outs

Posted By Kris Shock, Chesapeake Regional Tech Council, Friday, November 09, 2012

It's been a great week and before we hit the weekend we've got send some shout-outs and share a couple of pics from two great CRTC programs:

The Inaugural Tech Tasting was a big hit with more than 60 Members turning up at Bin 201 in spite of the dreary rain and sleet!

Special thanks to the Event Sponsor who took the leap with us to support this first-time event! It was a terrific night of connecting and we have lots of ideas for next year!

Special Thanks to our Bronze Sponsors:

On Thursday we had the great privilege to connect the CRTC Women in Tech (WIT) Forum with students at the Howard County Public Schools' Applications & Research Lab in Ellicot City.

Chaired by CRTC Board Member Angie Lienert of IntelliGenesis the WIT Forum engaged two speakers, Dina Haines, Instructional Specialist | CyberCenter, Anne Arundel Community College and Shapna Pal, Sr. Liaison Officer for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to engage the students on career opportunities in cyber security.

Both our speakers offered a different, yet equally interesting Cyber presentation. Shapna shared her role as a Liaison officer with the DHS and the value her technical background brings to her position. She did a great job of describing different cyber attack scenarios and the impact those attacks have on different people/agencies.

Dina was very animated with her presentation and had a lot of fun with the kids. She demonstrated ways to restore deleted files and gave a couple of parallel scenarios where that information would come in handy. She shared a lot of free and open source applications, that the students may want to explore.

Thank you to Kristin Herber at Tydings and Rosenberg for Chairing the WIT Volunteer Event and Susan Schneider from /training/ etc. for lending her support to the success of the event!

This morning we had a great group of folks around the table for Membership 101. If you could use a tune-up on all of the value offered through your CRTC Membership, click here to register for the December Membership 101 Meeting! It's not just for New Members!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Which Comes First?

Posted By Kris Shock, Chesapeake Regional Tech Council, Friday, July 06, 2012

Which Comes First?
Each day we speak with technology professionals who believe they would receive value from engaging with the CRTC network, but they want to experience the benefit before they invest in Membership.

We also speak with Members who are already invested in the network but have trouble finding time to come out and connect.

So which comes first: Value or Engagement? Do you get value because you are engaged or do you get engaged because you perceive value?

No matter which side of the "chicken or egg" you come down on the truth is there is an undeniable, reciprocal link between value and engagement.

That said, in our over-scheduled culture it is hard to make the time to get engaged even when you believe you will benefit from the time invested. That's why the CRTC has invested in a robust new member community platform to drive connections and value from your desktop to supplement the value you receive from in-person member engagement.

This new web platform can find you business partners and connections, lead to new business wins and help you find the region’s top talent. But the site can’t do it without you. Login at chesapeaketech.org today and enter your detailed company and personal profile today and reap the rewards.

The new online engine provides loads of opportunity to build relationships and drive connections online to add value to your in-person CRTC experience. To get up to speed fast, click here to view the CRTC Community Connections e-Learning program provided by Foster Knowledge.

Help connecting is just a phone call away! Need a little help logging in? Schedule a quick call with CRTC staff to fast-track your online connections. Email info@chesapeaketech.org to request a phone call. Please provide a few times that would work for you and CRTC staff will reach back to confirm an appointment.

Everything we do at the CRTC is about advancing technology throughout the Annapolis-Washington-Baltimore triangle but we can only connect you as well as we know you! Login TODAY* and complete your Corporate Primary profile to drive connections and opportunities all year long!

Looking forward,

Kris Valerio
Executive Director

Want to Get Your Emails Returned? Avoid These Words

Posted By Garret Ohm, The Sutter Group, Monday, May 21, 2012

(Note: This is a repost from the Social Media Marketing Forum blog)

This ties back to the Social Media Marketing Forum's "Making a Good First Impression" meeting from a few months ago, so I thought I should post. Especially since many of us in this Forum are involved in business development. Here's the article with the full infographic:

http://mashable.com/2012/02/09/boomerang-email-infographic/ (Via Mashable)

Do you have any email best practices that you'd like to share with the group? Leave them here as a comment. For me, it's not about any one thing, but if someone comes off as too "pitchy." That, combined with an email message that doesn't show any amount of thought or customization for me is a recipe for deletion.

TechAwards Noms - NEW Category

Posted By Garret Ohm, The Sutter Group, Friday, January 13, 2012
The Chesapeake Regional Tech Council (CRTC) will be hosting its seventh annual TechAwards 2012 on Thursday, March 29th. This year, we have added an exciting new category, the Future Innovator Award, that promotes excellence in technology advancement by a regional high school or college student. The award fosters new thinking in the understanding of technology and its place in the future careers of area students.

Students compete for this accolade as individuals and can self-nominate or be nominated by a teacher or mentor. This award is open to students in grades 9-12, community college and four year college programs. The student must be either from the Annapolis-Washington-Baltimore triangle and/or currently studying in the Annapolis-Washington-Baltimore area. Those participating in their school’s STEM program are encouraged to apply.

Criteria judges will use to decide this award are:
  • Student has shown how he/she incorporated new technologies or innovative strategies into a school science or technology project(s).
  • Student demonstrates critical thinking to implement technology as a solution to a current problem or issue.
  • Student demonstrates the ability to develop a strategy.
  • Student demonstrates product or service innovation, including proprietary technology or other advantage.
  • Student shows initiative in moving their project forward into the marketplace.
Please note that the deadline for nominations is Wednesday, January 25th. For more information, including links to the nomination forms, please visit: http://bit.ly/CRTC_TA2012_FutureInnovator

Thank you for your consideration, and we look forward to your participation!
