According to a 2010 MIT data analytics survey of 3,000 business executives and analysts, 53 percent of respondents say they do not have access to information needed to do their jobs from across their organizations. Thirty-three percent say they make critical decisions without the information they need. Organizations across the spectrum of industries are recognizing the critical need to unlock the value trapped in corporate and open source data. Whether it’s "big data”, "business analytics”, "business intelligence”, ”visual analytics”, or just plain "analytics”, organizations are increasingly willing to invest in this area. Those who have invested in analytics appreciate how it supports actionable insights and bold decisions. Virtually every research outfit (Gartner, IDC, Forrester, …) agree that 2012 will be a big year for analytics. Industry analysts have sized the market for business analytics at $122Bn in 2012, with an estimated compound annual growth rate of 8 percent. Analytics have even entered popular culture, with the movie "Moneyball” and Davenport’s best-selling business book "Competing on Analytics”.
