AACC is the Only Community College in Maryland Selected
Anne Arundel Community College is the only community college in Maryland and one of only 20 community colleges in the nation to be chosen for the Carnegie Classification for Community Engagement from the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. Two other Maryland colleges also were chosen among the 361 institutions that hold the classification.
AACC was selected based on its commitment as an institution to community engagement. As part of the selection process, AACC submitted extensive documentation of ways that exemplary community engagement practices are an integral part of the entire college, including:
• A campus-wide coordination with the Sarbanes Center for Public and Community Service that engages more than 1,000 students annually in community-based learning experiences as service-learning volunteers, interns, researchers and consultants.
• Community-based learning activities that are integrated into curriculum to enhance student learning and to meet community needs.
• Collaborative and mutually beneficial partnerships that are developed and maintained among all areas of the college with the community.
• Outreach programs and resources that benefit the college and the community.
"Receiving the Carnegie Classification for Community Engagement acknowledges that AACC is carrying out is civic mission in preparing our students to be engaged and informed citizens and that we are making a difference in our community,” said Cathleen H. Doyle, director of the Sarbanes Center for Public and Community Service.
AACC was first selected for the honor in 2008 and was invited to re-apply last year. The current designation will last until 2025.

AACC also was selected for the eighth consecutive year to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll by the Corporation for National and Community Service. Some factors for the selection include the scope and innovation of service projects, the percentage of student participation in service activities, incentives for service and the extent to which the school offers academic service-learning courses.
