Baltimore Business Journal Article: Defense industry's growth spurs tech group's changes

Baltimore Business Journal - by Scott Dance Staff

The Anne Arundel Tech Council's reach has grown beyond that county's borders toward Washington, D.C., Columbia and Baltimore. And with more growth expected to be on the way through military development at Fort George G. Meade, leaders felt a new name was in order: the Chesapeake Regional Tech Council.

"We used to be a sleepy little tech council tucked away in Annapolis," said Laura Willoughby, the council's executive director. "As we've grown, more and more of our members have come from a greater geographic region."

About a third of the council's new members come from outside Anne Arundel County, so "we felt that 'Anne Arundel' was no longer a good descriptor of who we are," she said. While the group's reach has overlapped with two other regional technology groups -- the Greater Baltimore Technology Council and Tech Council of Maryland -- the growth and specialization each organization has undergone means there is room for more than one, Willoughby said.
The groups share a mission of building up the regional technology economy and helping local companies grow.
